copyright

Copyright issues are always high in my mind as I am creating digital montages, and working with students. Mostly I use my own photographs, and look for copyright free images. This morning I came across a great graphic of a mackerel on a tin from Sainsbury’s. I took a photograph of the tin, and used the graphic in a montage. I guess that technically this is copyright theft - even though I took the photo of the tin. But, if I had used the photo of the whole tin, would it be copyright theft? and if so - what of Warhol’s use of Cambell’s and Mickey Mouse - did he get away without permission because of his stature, or did he have a team of people seeking permission of him to use images?

blipfoto

blipfoto is an amazing site - a bit like flickr - a photo sharing site - but with the constraint that one can only upload one photo a day, and the photo must have been taken on the day that it is uploaded to. This is a real discipline, and a great project to get my students involved in.
